Is Mod Podge Just Glue?
In short… no! Mod Podge is glue with benefits – and they’re benefits worth having! Yes, you can use Mod Podge to stick stuff down, but that’s not all this fantastic little pot of sauce has to offer. Mod Podge is also a sealer and a finish; it’s much stronger than PVA glue, and includes special ingredients that will give your project the strength and longevity that standard glue won’t!
How Long Does Mod Podge Take To Dry?
A coat of Mod Podge will feel touch-dry within an hour, but your best bet is to give a project a full 24 hours before you deem it completely dry.
How Long Will My Mod Podge Last?
Whilst Mod Podge doesn’t have an expiry date as such, it will typically last anywhere from 6 months to a year once opened. If left unopened and well-stored, your Mod Podge could last for years and be perfectly usable when you do finally start crafting with it!
Can I Use Mod Podge on Plastic?
Yes you can use Mod Podge on Plastic! Mod Podge is designed to enable you to decoupage any porous material onto almost any surface – so as long as the material you are using is porous (e.g. paper, fabric, etc.) then it should work no problem! If there are any non-porous embellishments you want to add to your plastic surface (such as buttons, beads or gems) then simply attach them using adhesive, allow this to dry fully, and then apply a layer of Mod Podge over the whole project to finish.
What Surfaces Can I Use Mod Podge On?
So many people want to know how to use Mod Podge when it comes to working with different surfaces, across a broad range of projects. The fantastic thing about Mod Podge is that it can be used on almost any surface! You can use it to decorate tin, cardboard, glass, wood, craft foam, some plastics, paper mache, and more! If in doubt, test a small area of the surface first before you jump straight into your project, just to make sure the Mod Podge will adhere fully.
Prepare wood surfaces by lightly sanding, wiping down with a damp cloth, and drying fully before use. Clean tin surfaces using a 50:50 water:vinegar solution.
How Do I Apply Mod Podge?
How to use Mod Podge is to some extent up to the individual, and can depend upon the project at hand, but generally speaking, it’s easiest to apply using either a soft bristle paintbrush or a sponge applicator brush. Always start at the base of your project and work ‘upwards’ – so apply a generous coat of Mod Podge to your project surface (too little and you will end up with wrinkled papers!) then place your papers on top of this. Next, smooth out the papers using a brayer or credit card, until all the bubbles/wrinkles are gone, then wait 10-20 minutes before applying a top coat of Mod Podge. It’s up to you how many top coats you apply, but we recommend at least a couple.
